An interactive technical workshop on “Recent Advances in the Real Time Data Acquisition System” was organized by the Department of Water Resources, Government of Orissa involving the participation of senior level officers from different Departments/Organizations, those who are directly or indirectly dealing with Acquisition of Hydrological and Meteorological Data. The objective of the workshop aimed at sharing knowledge on the sate-of- art technology available and in practice through deliberation, demonstration and interaction among the academicians, researchers and field engineers. The workshop was inaugurated by the Commissioner cum Secretary DOWR (Department of Water Resources) and the EIC (Engineer-in-Chief) WR (Water Resources) addressed the congregation with his key note speech. Apart from senior level officials from DOWR, delegates from Central Water Commission, IMD (Indian Meteorological Department), CGWB, SPCB and OSDMA attended the workshop. Mr. Vijay Kumar from New-Delhi was present on the occasion as an observer from Mott-Macdonald, the Technical Assistant and Management Consultancy for National Hydrology Project.
Sunjray Pty. Ltd, which is known for its innovative technologies across Australasia and being the pioneer in M2M and Real time Data Transfer Technology, was invited to the workshop.  Among the guest speakers Mr. Ma Zhan, Director General, Nanjing Automation Institute of Water Conservancy and Hydrology, Ministry of Water Resources, P.R.C, Mr. Jay Rath, CTO, Sunjray Pty Ltd, Sydney, Dr. R. Jha, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, NIT Rourkela and Mr. S.C. Sahoo, Director IMD took part in the deliberation and interaction all through. When Mr. Ma Zhan shared his knowledge and experience on the functionality of data acquisition segment covering the latest sensors and other equipment including data logger and RTU through pictorial illustrations, Mr. Jay Rath covered his part of the job in explaining different modes of data transmission and the pros & cons in each mode. He narrated how the Real Time Data Acquisition System will help the Water Resources Department increasing their efficiency in forecasting and combating the adverse situations. He emphasized and stretched upon GPRS based transmission which is a burgeoning technology and cost effective in providing unequalled accuracy and flexibility in transferring data from the source to destination. Zeroing in on the benefits, Mr. Rath showcased the system to be cost effective & flexible  having low installation & maintenance cost, with non directional antenna, two way communication, event notification through SMS and simultaneous routing to different IP addresses. He added, when the entire state is covered by telecommunication network of different service providers, this technology is the most secured and reliable one for the present age practice. At the end a vote of thanks was proposed by Engineer A.K. Nayak, Director Hydrometry on behalf of organizers. Mr. Satyabrata Mohanty, Mr. Sanjay Malick and Mr. Harshabardhan Mohanty are the key persons whose sincere and dedicated contribution made this workshop a great success.
